Frank Broyles lead the Razorbacks to Los Angeles in September of 1973 seeking revenge for the Trojans 31-10 win over the Hogs in Little Rock to open the 1972 season.  Arkansas went on to finish 6-5-0 in '72 while USC finished undefeated and won the National Championship.

USC Coach John McKay and his Trojans welcomed the Hogs into the Coliseum on September 15, 1973 carrying a 17-game win streak and a #1 ranking.  Although the Trojans ended the game by running the score up a bit it was close up into the 4th quarter.  Ultimately, the Trojans' defense was too much for the hogs holding All-SWC Running Back Dickey Morton in check, allowing only 73 yards on 12 carries.

Arkansas was able to keep Southern Cal scoreless until All-American Running Back Anthony Davis (24 runs for 96 yards and 1TD) capped off a USC 79-yard drive with less than a minute to play in the first half - giving the Trojans a 7-0 lead at halftime.

The Hogs and Trojans traded punts and turnovers during most of the 3rd quarter - the only excitement came from a 73-yard touchdown pass from USC's Pat Haden to Lynn Swann which was called back by an illegal procedure penalty.  Arkansas wasn't so lucky in the 4th quarter... A 22-yard run through the middle of the Arkansas defense by Anthony Davis gave Southern Cal the ball on the Arkansas 40-yard line which setup an eventual 22-yard field goal by Chris Lanaheau with 8:21 remaining in the game.  After the Hogs offense again stalled late in the 4th quarter USC piled on another score with less than 2 minutes to play when starting Trojan QB Pat Haden ran it in from 15-yards out to go up 17-0.Southern California's win handed the Razorbacks their first shutout since the Hogs 7-0 loss to Baylor in 1966.
