DALLAS, Texas – In a match up of Heisman Trophy finalists, Darren McFadden and Chase Daniel, at the 72nd AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, it was Missouri tailback Tony Temple who put in a record-breaking performance in front of 73,114 fans. The senior back tallied 281 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns, both Cotton Bowl records, to lead No. 7 Missouri to a 38-7 win over the No. 25 Razorbacks.
The rushing records came for Temple on his final carry of the game, a 40-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
McFadden finished the day with 105 rushing yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. During the game, the junior tailback moved into second place on the all-time Southeastern Conference rushing list passing LSU’s Kevin Faulk. McFadden ends his junior season with 4,590 career rushing yards. His 2007 season rushing total of 1,830 yards is second all-time on the SEC single-season list.
Temple opened the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run to cap a six-play drive that covered 73 yards during the Tigers’ second offensive possession. The Tiger offense crossed midfield after Daniel found William Franklin on a 22-yard gain. After the extra point, Missouri led 7-0 with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter.
Felix Jones gave the Razorbacks good field position with a 46-yard return to the Missouri 41-yard line on the ensuing kickoff, but the Missouri defense held strong and forced Arkansas to line up for the punt.
Reggie Fish appeared to pick up the first down on a reverse during a fake punt, but a timeout called before the snap negated the play. A second fake was unsuccessful when Farod Jackson was stopped at the line and Missouri took over on downs.
With 4:34 left in the first half, Temple found the endzone for the second time during the game to extend the Tigers’ lead to 14-0. On the six-play drive, the senior tailback accounted for 66 yards on four rushes including the four-yard score.
Temple finished the half with 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
McFadden gave the Hogs a spark when he returned a kickoff late in the first half 33 yards and into Missouri territory. Jones followed with a 23-yard rush on the first play of the drive, but the Arkansas offense stalled and freshman Alex Tejada missed his second field goal of the game, a 37-yard attempt. He also missed a kick of 35 yards on the Razorbacks’ opening possession.
The Tigers went in to halftime with a two-touchdown lead. Arkansas was shut out in the first half for the second time this season.
Temple picked up where he left off with his third rushing score of the game, a four-yard run out of the shotgun formation. The Tigers drove the ball 48 yards after a short kickoff by the Razorbacks to open the second half.
After trading three-and-out series, the Arkansas offense took over at their own 27-yard line. A false-start penalty and two incomplete passes intended for fullback Peyton Hillis brought up third and 15 for the Razorbacks. Casey Dick completed a screen pass to Jones who turned up field for the first down and a 41-yard gain before William Moore stripped the ball and Loren Williams recovered the fumble for the Tigers on their own 38-yard line.
The Razorbacks got the ball back when Temple fumbled the ball after an eight-yard pick up. Marcus Shavers recovered the fumble for Arkansas.
On the ensuing drive, the Tigers regained the momentum when Moore picked off a pass by Dick and returned the interception 26 yards for a touchdown to pad the Missouri lead, 28-0.
McFadden rushed for a score with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter, a three-yard sweep run to the left. A personal-foul penalty by Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon kept the Arkansas drive alive for the junior tailback’s 16th touchdown of the season.
The Tigers went into the fourth quarter with a 28-7 lead.
During a Missouri possession, Adrian Davis intercepted a Daniel pass, but during the return the sophomore defensive end was stripped of the ball and Missouri recovered to regain possession. Including the Daniel interception and Davis fumble, five turnovers littered the first half of the fourth quarter.
A muffed punt by Jerell Norton was recovered by Connell Davis on the Arkansas 11. Jeff Wolfert tacked on a 32-yard field goal and Temple’s fourth score of the game gave Missouri its final margin.
Daniel finished that game completing 12 of 29 attempts for 136 yards and one interception.
Arkansas is now 3-7-1 in its 11 Cotton Bowl appearances and 11-22-3 in all bowl games.

Shreveport, La. - Cedric Cobbs rushed for 141 yards and one score to lead the Arkansas Razorbacks to a 27-14 victory over the Missouri Tigers in the MainStay Independence Bowl Wednesday night.
The Razorbacks close the 2003 season with a 9-4 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Missouri ends the season at 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12.
Arkansas reached nine wins for the second-straight season following 2002's 9-5 record. It marks the first time the Hogs have had back-to-back seasons of at least nine wins since accomplishing the feat five straight years from 1985-89.
Cobbs, who set a school record with his seventh 100-yard rushing effort, took home Offensive MVP honors. Senior linebacker Caleb Miller earned Defensive MVP honors after registering 16 stops, with 10 solo tackles.
"I'm so proud of this team and this group of seniors," Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. "It takes a group with this kind of leadership to bounce back from a three-game losing streak like we had and end the season on the right note like this.
"Missouri is a good football team. Their quarterback (Brad Smith) is a dangerous player. They did a great job, but we were able to make the big plays and get some turnovers when we needed them."
Arkansas finished the game with 385 yards total offense to 407 yards for Missouri. The Razorbacks netted 300 yards rushing, with Cobbs leading all rushers in the game. DeCori Birmingham finished with 85 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Matt Jones ran for 74 yards on seven carries.
Jones also hit 6-of-14 passes for 49 yards, while Ryan Sorahan hit 3-of-3 attempts for 36 yards.
Richard Smith led the Razorbacks with 29 yards on three receptions, while George Wilson had three catches for 25 yards.
Kicker Chris Balseiro set an Arkansas bowl and Independence Bowl record by hitting four fields.
Missouri's Zack Abron ran for 137 yards on 19 carries to lead the Tigers, while Smith rushed for 96 yards on 20 attempts.
Smith also hit 17-of-30 passes for 155 yards. Thomson Omboga led all receivers with eight catches for 63 yards.
On the first drive of the game the Hogs marched into Missouri territory and faced a fourth-and-one at the 27. Cobbs went up the middle for a four-yard gain and a first down.
Two plays later the Hogs faced third-and-four at the 17. Cobbs was hit after no gain to bring up a field goal attempt from 33-yard out. Balseiro's attempt was good to give the Hogs a 3-0 lead with 8:50 left in the first quarter.
Missouri quickly answered on the ensuing possession. Abron ripped off a 42-yard run to put the Tigers in scoring position and capped off the six-play drive with a one-yard scoring run to give Missouri a 7-3 lead.
An exchange of punts pinned the Hogs on their one-yard line with 3:33 left in the first quarter. On first down, Jones hit Smith who tip-toed the sideline for a 16-yard gain. A series of runs by Cobbs and Birmingham put the ball at the Arkansas 46-yard line.
Arkansas continued the march inside the Missouri 20-yard line until the Tigers' defense tightened. The Razorbacks pulled within one at 7-6 when Balseiro connected on a 28-yard field goal with 13:09 left in the first half.
The Hogs forced Missouri to punt and received a gift when the snap sailed over the punter's head. Bo Mosley recovered the loose ball at the Missouri three-yard line.
On third down, Jones bootlegged right and juked a defender to find the end zone and give Arkansas the lead. Arkansas' two-point attempt was good and gave the Hogs a 14-7 lead with 7:24 left in the half.
After forcing another Missouri punt the Hogs increased their lead to 21-7 when Cobbs scampered 41-yards for his first touchdown of the day.
Missouri responded by driving to the Arkansas 12-yard line. On fourth-and-one the Hogs held and took over possession.
The Razorbacks snuffed out a fake field goal on the last play of the first half. The holder took the snap and threw a desperation pass that was picked off by Tom Crowder to send the game to halftime.
Missouri took the second-half kickoff and promptly marched into Arkansas territory. A pair of runs by Abron and Smith put the ball at the Arkansas 17-yard line.
The Tigers faced fourth-and-goal from the one and elected to go for the touchdown. Smith's pass was picked off at the goal line by Lerinezo Robinson and returned to the nine-yard line.
Arkansas took the momentum from the interception and marched to the Missouri eight-yard line. The Tigers' defense held and forced Arkansas to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Balseiro for a 24-7 lead with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
Missouri made it a 10-point game at 24-14 when Smith carried into the end zone from five yards out with less than a minute left in the third quarter.
The Hogs responded by driving to the Missouri 14-yard line to open the fourth quarter. The Tigers stuffed Cobbs on third-and-four from the six to set up another field goal attempt. From 24-yards out Balseiro connected for his fourth field goal of the night and a 27-14 Arkansas lead with 12:57 left in the game.
The Razorbacks took over at the Missouri 35-yard line after Crowder blocked punter Brock Harvey's kick. The Tigers held the Hogs, however, and forced a punt. Arkansas punter Jacob Skinner then pinned Missouri at the one-yard line.
After allowing Missouri to drive inside the 10-yard line, the Razorbacks tightened on defense and held on a fourth-and-goal with less than six minutes to go in the game.
The Razorbacks running game ran off the final minutes of the game to give the Hogs their second bowl win under Nutt.

Nashville, Tenn. - After giving up a touchdown on the first possession of the game, the Minnesota Golden Gophers reeled off 29 straight points to come away with a 29-14 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Music City Bowl.
Arkansas ends the 2002 season with a 9-5 overall record, while Minnesota improved to 8-5 with the victory.
"This was a disappointing loss," Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. "We are a better team than what we showed in this game. We had a great start to the game, scoring a touchdown on the opening possession, but we were not able to keep the momentum."
The Razorbacks were held to 288 yards of offense for the game with 80 yards coming on the ground and 208 through the air.
Matt Jones hit 12-of-24 passes for 119 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Ryan Sorahan completed 6-of-15 passes for 89 yards with one score.
Fred Talley led the Hogs with 33 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Minnesota rolled up 434 yards of offense with 266 coming from the passing game and 168 on the ground.
Minnesota tailback Thomas Tapeh led all rushers with 99 yards on 19 carries and one score. Quarterback Asad Abdul-Khaliq hit 16-of-31 passes for 216 yards and one TD.
Arkansas wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. The Razorbacks took the opening kickoff 74 yards in eight plays and took a 7-0 lead on Jones' two-yard touchdown pass to George Wilson.
Minnesota took the ensuing kickoff and marched into Razorback territory. The Gophers used the big play to move across midfield with a 50-yard pass from wideout Danny Upchurch on a fake reverse.
The Gophers were held to a 24-yard field goal by Dan Nystrom on the drive to make it a 7-3 game with 7:59 remaining in the first quarter.
After forcing the Hogs to go three and out, the Gophers partially blocked Richie Butler's punt and set up at the Arkansas 37-yard line.
The Razorbacks, however, held the Gophers from advancing further and a 45-yard Nystrom field goal to make it a 7-6 game with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
Minnesota took a 9-7 lead early in the second quarter following Nystrom's third field goal of the day. The go-ahead score capped a 13-play, 62-yard drive that took 7:50 off the clock.
The Gophers increased their lead to 12-7 with 6:24 left in the first half following Nystrom's fourth field goal of the day. Nystrom connected from 24-yards out to cap a 10-play, 78-yard drive.
Neither team was able to sustain a drive throughout most of the third quarter. With less than seven minutes remaining in the quarter, the Gophers took over at their 30-yard line.
Minnesota marched 70 yards in eight plays and took a 19-7 lead on Ben Utecht's 19-yard touchdown pass from Abdul-Khaliq.
The Gophers extended their lead to 22-7 following Nystrom's fifth field goal of the game. Nystrom hit from 29-yards out to complete a nine-play, 55-yard drive that took 3:27 off the clock.
Minnesota put the game out of reach when running back Thomas Tapeh rambled 33-yards to the end zone to put the Golden Gophers up 29-7 with 7:49 left in the game.
The Razorbacks cut the deficit with just over five minutes left in the game when Sorahan hit Richard Smith in the end zone on a 10-yard scoring strike for the final 29-14 margin.

DALLAS - In a battle of two stingy defenses, the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners outlasted the Arkansas Razorbacks 10-3 in the 66th annual SBC Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day.
Oklahoma (11-2) went to halftime with a 7-0 lead and held on for a 10-3 victory over Arkansas (7-5) in front of over 70 thousand at historic Cotton Bowl Stadium. The Sooners kept the UA offense off balance all day including earning a bowl record nine sacks.
Oklahoma's Quentin Griffin earned offensive player of the game honors after rushing for 56 yards on 19 carries while Sooners' strong safety Roy Williams earned outstanding defensive player of the game honors after totaling six stops including three tackles for loss.
Arkansas managed only 50 yards of total offense on the afternoon and completed its only scoring drive of the day with a fourth-quarter field goal from Brennan O'Donohoe.
The Hogs struggled to get the running game going against the OU defense posting 37 yards on 42 carries. Arkansas completed two of 13 passes for 13 yards and an interception.
Arkansas' defense kept the Hogs in the game until late in the fourth quarter. OU rushed 34 times for only 56 yards. The UA defense earned 10 tackles for loss of their own including four sacks. Senior All-American Jermaine Petty led the Razorbacks with 10 tackles.
Oklahoma opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 13-play, 63-yard scoring drive that ended when quarterback Nate Hybl rushed to paydirt from one yard out. Tim Duncan added the extra point and the Sooners led 7-0.
The next scoreboard tally didn't come until the opening drive of the second half when the Sooners capped a 65-yard drive with a 32-yard field goal by Duncan to extend the lead to 10-0.
Arkansas culminated its only sustained offensive drive of the day midway through the final period as O'Donohoe nailed a 32-yard field goal to close the OU lead to 10-3. The Razorback defense responded and gave the UA offense a pair of opportunities to drive for the winning score, but OU All-American Rocky Calmus forced a fumble from UA signal caller Matt Jones in the final two minutes to halt the Hogs' last hope.

Tuscaloosa, AL - Rain, lightning and a 21-point deficit proved to be no match for the ninth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks as the Hogs claimed a 34-31 come-from-behind victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in double-overtime.

Arkansas improved to 4-0 with the victory and 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference.  Alabama fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.

Tied at halftime, Alabama exploded for 21 points in the first eight minutes of the third quarter to take a 31-10 lead.  But, the Razorbacks narrowed the deficit to 31-17 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter and seized the momentum.

Mark Pierce made it a 31-24 game with 8:31 left in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown run that capped a drive that began after Alabama fumbled at the Razorback 31-yard line.

Arkansas forced the Tide to punt on the ensuing possession and promptly marched 71 yards in 12 plays and tied the game with 27 seconds left in regulation on a three-yard touchdown pass from Matt Jones to Richard Smith.

In overtime, Arkansas took the first possession but was unable to net any points after Jones was sacked and tagged with an intentional grounding penalty on third down.  The Hogs were unable to complete a fourth-and-25, giving Alabama the ball.

Alabama took the ball on its possession and moved to the 21-yard line, but kicker Brian Bostick shanked a 38-yard attempt to send the game into a second overtime.

The Tide received the ball to open the second OT frame, but had the ball only one play as Jimarr Gallon picked off quarterback Brodie Croyle.

Cedric Cobbs carried the ball five times on Arkansas' ensuing possession as the Razorbacks moved inside the Alabama five-yard line.  De'Arrius Howard moved the ball to the two to set up a fourth and goal.

From there, kicker Chris Balseiro connected on a 19-yard game winner to keep the Hogs unbeaten on the season heading into an off-week.

The game was delayed an hour and three minutes before the teams took the field due to lightning and strong thunderstorms that passed through the area.

Jones put the Hogs on the scoreboard with a 39-yard scramble down the sideline to give Arkansas a 7-0 lead with 12:08 left in the first quarter.

After a missed field goal by the Hogs, the Tide marched 80-yards and evened the game when Croyle hit Triandos Luke on a 16-yard scoring strike.

With the first half winding down,  Balseiro connected on a career-best 38-yard field goal to give the Hogs a 10-7 lead.

Aided by a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty, Alabama tied the game as the first half expired on Bostick's 48-yard field goal.

Alabama took its first lead of the day on the opening possession of the second half.  Croyle hit Dre Fulgham on a 71-yard scoring strike to give the Crimson Tide a 17-10 lead.

On Arkansas' next play from scrimmage following the Alabama score, Jones was picked off on a tipped ball.

On first down from the 12-yard line, Croyle hit Fulgham in the end zone to extend the Alabama lead to 24-10 with 11:40 left in the third quarter.

After forcing Arkansas to punt, Alabama took over inside its 20 and needed only two plays to find the end zone.  Williams burst untouched up the middle and raced 80 yards for the score to give Crimson Tide a 31-10 lead.

The Razorbacks then began a march from their 12-yard line with Sorahan under center.  On second-and-goal from the five, Cobbs carried around right end to put the Razorbacks on the board to make it 31-17.

After an Alabama punt, Sorahan hit Steven Harris at the 26-yard line and had 15 yards tagged on to the play following an unsportsmanlike penalty against Alabama.  Arkansas set up with a first down at the 14.

Alabama halted the Arkansas' drive when Cobbs fumbled at the 13-yard line.

The Razorbacks' rally began from there as the Hogs won their league opener and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas got its first turnover of the year and the kings of overtime played their first-ever extra-period game in Fayetteville as the Razorbacks took advantage of missed opportunities by No. 22 Alabama to post a 24-23 double-overtime victory on Saturday.
The win improves the Razorbacks to 3-1 overall and more importantly 2-0 in the SEC for the first time since 1998. The win is the first for Arkansas over a ranked team since Sept. 13, 2003, when UA won at No. 5 Texas, 38-28. It is the first win over a ranked team in Fayetteville since Oct. 27, 2001, when the Hogs topped No. 17 Auburn, 42-17.
Leigh Tiffin missed three field goals and an extra point for Alabama, including a field goal in the first overtime and the extra point in the second overtime. Jeremy Davis’ PAT conversion for Arkansas was the game-winner in the second overtime.
With the win, Arkansas is now 6-1 in overtime games, but this is the first overtime game for the Hogs since 2003 and the first played in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks have played in the three longest games in NCAA history – a pair of seven-overtime victories (58-56 at Ole Miss in 2001 and 71-63 at Kentucky in 2003) and a six-overtime loss (41-38 at Tennessee in 2002). This is the second overtime win for Arkansas over Alabama. UA claimed another double-overtime victory in Tuscaloosa in 2003, 34-31.
Saturday’s game may not have lived up to previous Arkansas standards for number of overtimes, but it did not lack for dramatics.
Mitch Mustain was picked off by Lionel Mitchell in the first overtime. Alabama ran Kenneth Darby three times for five yards on its possession, settling for a 37-yard field goal attempt. Tiffen was wide right for the third time after earlier missing to the right from 33 and 30 yards.
In the second extra period, Alabama (3-1, 0-1) went first. Six plays into the drive, John Parker Wilson hit Nick Walker for a one-yard touchdown, but Tiffin pushed the extra point to the right.
On Arkansas’ possession, Darren McFadden, who finished with 112 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, gained 12 yards on first down. Three plays later, Mitch Mustain, who was just seven-of-22 for 97 yards with three interceptions, faced a third-and-eight. He fired a pass into the right corner of the end zone where Ben Cleveland went above two defenders to make the catch for his second touchdown of the season.
Davis, who missed an extra point earlier, ended it when he nailed the conversion attempt down the middle.
Down 17-10 early in the fourth quarter, Wilson, who was 16-of-20 for 243 yards and three touchdowns, capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 14-yard scoring pass to Keith Brown with 13:36 remaining.
Jeffrey Dukes intercepted a Mustain pass at the Alabama 42 and the Crimson Tide moved into field goal territory for a potential game-winner. Wilson hit Brown for seven yards and carried twice for 12 yards before four straight carries by Kenneth Darby for 14 yards moved the ball to the Arkansas nine.
Three plays later, with 3:06 left, Tiffin missed the 30-yarder.
Arkansas moved to its 49 before being forced to punt and Alabama got the ball with only 15 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime.
Down 10-3 at the half, Arkansas went to McFadden and then got big plays from its defense.
McFadden’s three-yard touchdown pulled the Hogs within one before the defense, counting penalties, pushed the Crimson Tide back 29 yards on its next two possessions.
On its first possession of the second half, Arkansas drove 93 yards in 13 plays to get within 10-9. McFadden carried the load, running eight times for 51 yards and getting the score on a three-yard pitch to the left.
McFadden opened the possession with carries of four, 29 and five yards. A pass interference penalty gained the Razorbacks 15 yards and a Mustain keeper on third down gained another first down at the Alabama 27.
Following two incompletions, Mustain hit Felix Jones for 23 yards on a screen pass to the Alabama four. McFadden got in three plays later, but the extra point was no good, leaving Alabama with a 10-9 advantage.
After a turnover, Alabama took over at the Arkansas 45. Wilson faced a third and 13 at the 48, but Antwain Robinson, who had 2.5 sacks for 19 yards, got to Wilson for a loss of 13 yards and forced a fumble. Randy Kelly scooped it up at the 39 and raced to the left corner of the end zone to put Arkansas ahead 15-10.
Mustain hit McFadden in the right flat on the two-point attempt for a 17-10 lead with 4:08 left in the third quarter.
Kelly finished with 13 tackles, the fumble return for a touchdown, a sack and a tackle for a loss. Arkansas entered the game last in all of NCAA Division I with no forced turnovers for the season.
The Razorback defense had a season-high 5.5 sacks for 38 yards and limited the Crimson Tide to 118 rushing yards, which is 41 yards below Alabama’s average.
Despite the big play, Alabama answered on its next possession with Wilson hitting Brown for the 14-yard score to tie the game 17-17.
Alabama extended its lead to 10-3 at the end of the first half with Leigh Tiffin’s 46-yard field goal, but it could have been more for the Tide.
Wilson scrambled for 23 yards on one play and 10 yards on another, moving Alabama to the Arkansas 15. After a false start moved the ball to the 20, Kelly and Robinson got to Wilson for a nine-yard sack on third down, setting up Tiffin’s field goal.
Arkansas had a chance to set itself up for another score after Jacob Skinner’s 43-yard punt pinned Alabama at its one.
Alabama moved out to the 10 and on third-and-one, Darby gained 12 yards to the 22. On first down, Wilson had time to wait for D.J. Hall to get open deep down the middle of the field for a 78-yard scoring pass, which gave the Tide a 7-3 lead with 8:50 left in the half.
Skinner set up the first score of the game with a 30-yard punt downed by Chris Houston at the Alabama seven.
A four-yard sack by Jamaal Anderson at the seven forced P.J. Fitzgerald to punt from his end zone.
Cedric Washington, in his first game as Arkansas’ punt returner, returned the punt eight yards to the Alabama 37.
McFadden had runs of 12 and nine yards on the drive, but Mustain’s third-down pass from the seven was incomplete.
Sophomore Jeremy Davis converted his first career field goal attempt, hitting from 24 yards out to give the Hogs a 3-0 with 4:43 left in the first quarter.
Davis’ field goal extended Arkansas’ streak of consecutive games scoring to a school-record matching 125. The first streak was from 1973-83.
Alabama had a chance to take the lead on its ensuing possession with Wilson surviving a couple of big hits to move his team down the field.
Sam Olajubutu popped Wilson on a scramble for no gain at the Alabama 29. Wilson bounced back and found D.J. Hall for 26 yards and a first down to the Arkansas 49. Wilson took another big hit under heavy pressure on a third-down incompletion, but a personal foul on UA’s Michael Grant gave the Tide a first down at the Razorback 17.
Alabama drove inside the 10, but a holding penalty and a false start pushed the Crimson Tide back to the 26, and Leigh Tiffin’s 33-yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Hogs took over at their seven and moved out near midfield where Skinner hit his 43-yard punt to the one.
Jones finished with 65 yards on four carries while Marcus Monk had 53 yards on two receptions.
Darby had 64 yards on 26 carries for Alabama. Brown had seven receptions for 97 yards and Hall six catches for 144 yards.

Knoxville, Tenn.- Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen hit tight end Jason Witten on a 25-yard touchdown pass in the sixth overtime period to give the 10th-ranked Vols a 41-38 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday night at Neyland Stadium.
The game was the second longest in NCAA history. Last season, the Arkansas and Ole Miss set the NCAA record for the longest game with a seven overtime contest in Oxford.
The loss dropped the Razorbacks to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Volunteers improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.
The Vols' winning touchdown came after the Razorbacks had connected on a 47-yard field goal by David Carlton to take a 38-35 lead on the first possession of the sixth overtime.
The Razorbacks forced overtime after rallying from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Tennessee took a 17-3 lead on Jabari Davis' 58-yard touchdown run with 14:03 left in the game.
The Hogs then began an 11-play, 60-yard scoring march that culminated with De'Arrius Howard's 10-yard scoring run to cut the Vols' lead to 17-10 with 6:65 left in the game.
With 3:45 remaining, the Razorbacks took over at their eight yard line needing a touchdown to tie. Quarterback Matt Jones needed only one play as he scrambled out of the pocket and found Richard Smith who went 92 yards untouched for the tying score.
The 92-yard throw-and-catch marked the longest offensive play in Arkansas history.
"Our players fought their guts out," Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. "We were one play away. This one is hard on them (players). We improved in some areas and did some things better. This is bitter."
The score remained tied after each team converted field goal attempts in the first two overtimes.
In the fourth overtime, Jones put the Hogs ahead 29-23 with a five-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was no good.
Tennessee answered, however, when Tony Brown hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass from Clausen to knot the game at 29-29. The Vols also failed on the two-point conversion.
In the fifth overtime, Davis gave the Vols a 35-29 lead with a one-yard plunge into the endzone. This time, Arkansas answered when Howard also scored from the one. Both two-point conversions failed leading to Tennessee's dramatic game-winning touchdown in the sixth overtime.

Jones hit 11-of-19 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. Cedric Cobbs ran for 84 yards on 16 carries, while Howard carried the ball 20 times for 77 yards and two scores.

The Razorbacks will next travel to Auburn for an 11:30 a.m. CT showdown with the Tigers. The game will be regionally televised by Jefferson Pilot.
