I was playing when Coach Holtz arrived at UA. He wanted to change the helmets to a larger Hog and a White Stripe down the center. They looked good but supporters objected so prior to first game against New Mexico State in 1977 they were changed.

Check out the image graphic referenced in my last post by linking to "Last Uploads" on this site. It reproduced poorly, but is clear enough to make the point.

Tanner Donnelly said: "This is huge as you look at what color they have us now its almost a pinkish red when it should be right between a maroon and a red."

Thankfully there is someone else out there that is concerned about this serious issue. In October I went so far as to research the "red" color issue, even contacting the UA Athletic Dept on the matter. Among several concerns I had was the wide disparity in RAZ team uniform color among the various sports. I was specifically told that our official color of pantone 200 could not be reproduced by uniform manufacturers; so "LET THE VARIATIONS BEGIN". Our baseball team looks like they play for MSstate!

The "PINK FACTOR" in pantone 200 is a 100% fact. I pulled the red/pantone color chart off the web, assigned SEC team reds to various matches, compared the red the SWClassic used in their logo, compared various RAZ website reds used, etc. The result of several hours was a detailed image graphic, which shows our official red next to other SEC users of red, and concluded the following:

"Official Razorback RED is PMS 200. Official SWClassic logo was PMS 199. Other SEC teams using BRIGHT reds - GA (Red032) & MS (PMS186) - are less pink than AR. Cowboys Stadium/Jones chose to use those reds rather than RAZ red in my opinion for that very reason. Three other SEC teams use DARK reds - AL, SC, MSt - which are 'richer' versions of say maroon, also leaning towards pink. Our "cardinal red" you might say is STUCK IN BETWEEN the brights and the darks, tending to come off not so great online/websites, on the field/live, and even on TV. Our red cannot even be matched by our uniform vendors, yielding a plethora of reds across our athletics. You can bet everybody notices this and might prefer a slight change that would allow more uniformity AND look richer (LESS PINK) at the same time. But how many SPORTS fans would dare make an issue out of something like this? Maybe a handful. Still needs to be done."

Mr. Donnelly, I am most eager to join in any effort towards correcting this. I will watch this site for a positive reply, and then take steps to link with you afterward. (Or if this site's moderator might assist putting us together, I give him/her permission for you to have my email address.)

This is all a 'no-brainer', in that no Hog supporter could possibly disagree with a change that would improve our image. There is no better time than NOW to do it!

GO BIG RED!...and that be the REAL red.

I didn't know nike was taking over next year... hhmm...

I am a bigger fan of the cardinal red though... Are we trying to go lighter because mississippi state and alabama are so close to the cardinal red?

I just think since Hogs a red, maybe we should have the option of a white helmet. The red pants thing has been exciting from time to time.

I am basing the Dr. Gearhart comment on this letter from the UA website

Letter from the Chancellor:

As the university modernizes its physical plant, its classroom technologies, and reviews its core curriculum, it also must modernize its graphic identity. For some time now it has been apparent that the University of Arkansas needed to update its logo. Handsome though it was, our last logo was developed before the Internet was widely used, and it did not display well on monitors. It also was not as flexibly designed as our current logo, which restricted its functionality.

A fresh, new logo was much needed and most welcome.

It also will help the university establish itself as a brand—an area of pressing need wherein we will be intensifying our efforts as we attempt to grow the university’s enrollment. This new logo is reflective of the brand we are trying to achieve. Toward that end, it is equally important that we promote a clear, consistent image throughout our various colleges, departments and units. This style guide will better enable us to project a professional and uniform appearance in our branding and marketing efforts moving forward.

University relations has spent a good deal of time and effort developing this logo. It has been a deliberative and collaborative process that drew upon the office’s in-house expertise, as well as the numerous outside opinions solicited. I greatly appreciate their willingness to take on this difficult project, and am extremely pleased with the results. I hope you are, too, and that you will assist us by ensuring consistent and proper use of the logo in all its functions.

Thank you for all your efforts on the university’s behalf.

G. David Gearhart
Chancellor, University of Arkansas

This has frustrated me quite a bit as well. The main plus is that it hasn't found it's way into the uniforms yet - hopefully it never will. I have changed the red I use on this site so many times trying to get it right.... The problem is that it's too pink.

Hopefully they don't make the change after Nike takes over the uniforms next year.

Are you aware that the University of Arkansas and specifically Chancellor Gearhart have/has taken it upon themselves to change the historical color of the University of Arkansas from the traditional cardinal red to a scarlett red (pantone 200) and basically changing our color from that of the traditional Dark Red(more similar to pantone 1955) depicted in pictures from 1942-the 2000's in your website photos This pantone 200 color is the exact same color as Ohio State University.

This is the official word from The Ohio State University on the Pantone colors to match Scarlet & Gray If you ask for Gray matching Pantone 429 and Scarlet matching Pantone 200 you cannot go wrong.

The Ohio State University Scarlet PANTONE 200

CMYK: four-color process formula:

0 cyan
100% magenta
65% yellow
15% black
The UA suggested 4 color process for PANTONE 200

          Cyan = 0%

          Magenta = 100%

          Yellow = 63%

          Black = 12%

pretty similar, in fact from color class 101 Ohio States is darker because they use 3% more black???

This is huge as you look at what color they have us now its almost a pinkish red when it should be right between a maroon and a red.

I would be interested in your response and if you are interested in getting a grass roots campaign started to get the colors back to what they are supposed to be....This would also end the confusion as to what color our fans wear to the games.....you cannot possibly wear anything that matches pantone 200....but the pantone 1955 0r 201 can be matched by nike wear or underarmor russell etc.

I submit to you that this official rendering of the logos, helmet http://styleguides.uark.edu/15131.php
etc are a pretty sissy color and are an extreme left to the color that The Arkansas Razorbacks really are/should be. Would it be possible to get a petiton started on your facebook site concerning this matter as I think it is a travesty!!!!

WE ARE NOT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!!!!

The dates of the helmets are correct. The problem arises because the faint double lines separating the years of change are confusing. The years listed are for the helmet BELOW the double line but appear to be for the helmet above it. Trying to describe it is more confusing that just going to the very first helmet and looking for yourself.

I seem to remember a white helmet with red hog sometime during my lifetime (after 1960). Am I just dreaming?

I think the confusion results from the dividing lines. They incorrectly group the years and helmets. For instance, the helmet with the number on the side has the dates 1964-1966 immediately below it and then a line drawn across the page. You should put the dividing lines immediately above the years to more accurately show what dates are associated with which helmets.
