Last Tuesday morning it was announced that Arkansas Razorback pitcher D.J. Baxendale was added to the 22 man roster to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Razorback’s Coach Dave Van Horn will be serving as an assistant coach for Team USA.
Another Razorback was named to that 22 man team. Freshman Dominic Ficociello was also named to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He will join forces with Baxendale and Van Horn plus other collegiate players from around the nation to represent the USA in the tournament.
Ficociello is regarded as one of the nation’s best freshmen. Ficociello boasts a .363 batting average which leads the Diamond Hogs. He also leads the team in runs batted in (RBIs) with 47. In the SEC, finding a better freshman hitter would be difficult. Dominic Ficociello leads the rest of the SEC freshman in Batting Average (.363), RBIs (47), Hits (66), and Doubles (15). Ficociello is a definite threat everytime he steps to the plate to drive home runs or at least get on base.
It is a great honor to be chosen for this team. The players arrive for practices with Team USA on June 22 and the tournament lasts from July 3-8. It is a great opportunity for the players and great exposure for Arkansas and an excellent testament to what Dave Van Horn has been able to accomplish during his continued tenure as Arkansas Razorback Baseball Head Coach.
